The winter months are so beautiful here in Colorado so we thought we would go over winter vacations - Colorado ski season. This is just some basic stuff to cover if you have never been to the 420 friendly state of Colorado Make sure first to have some warm cannabis clothing to keep you toasty. Everyday you are in for something different! Winter obviously officially starts in November, but here in Colorado, it seems to always get it’s start in October! If you like snow, then the most predictable time to visit and see some snow is over Halloween! Just about every year since I was a small child I can remember there being some kind of snow or ice storm on Halloween. Colorado weather is anything but predictable! For example, a storm will come during the night and it would be a blizzard outside when you wake up, and then an hour later the sun will be shining and all of the snow is just gone! It can also go exactly the opposite way and be beautiful, warm and sunny, then suddenly change to cold, blustery and snowy. Sadly though, if it isn’t a heavy snow, building a snowman is out of the question because the snow will melt almost as fast as the storm came!
One of my favorite things about the winter vacations - Colorado ski season is some of our snow storms that happen in Colorado are called thunder snow. What’s that, you ask? It is literally a thunderstorm in the winter with snow rather than rain. The Weather Channel.com says that, ”Thundersnow develops when the air is below freezing near the ground, and unlike most summer thunderstorms, it isn't near-ground air that rises all the way into the tall thunderstorm top. The instability is in only a shallow layer aloft. In thundersnow, the "action" mainly takes place in a rather shallow layer that is usually near 20,000 feet and only around 5,000 feet thick.” When thunder snow happens, it usually means a large accumulation of snow is happening and the roads will be getting bad. It is really crazy and very cool to see and hear! It also can only heard only within a small proximity to the storm. Thunder snow doesn’t happen very often, but when it does, it is usually loud and very noticeable within that area. According to the American Meteorological Society Online Journal, that compared to warm-season thunderstorms, the analyzed thunder snow storms had similar electrical properties with lower flash rates and smaller vertical depths, which suggests they are weaker, more ordinary thunderstorms lacking any kind of warm cloud depth above zero degrees Celsius. Thunder snow is a rare phenomenon, so if you get to hear it while visiting, you are a lucky person! Snow in Colorado is pretty common, but if you want a lot and want it often, then the best areas to go to are in the mountains, or as locals call it, “the high country.” It snows quite a bit all over Colorado, but we can also go for several days to several weeks without snow during the winter. Our snow storms are either very hard and very wet snow storms, or they are very cold, with temperatures dipping down into the negatives. Either way, there are many ways to enjoy the storm, which ever way it may be. My personal favorite is sitting on the couch with a blanket and a cup of hot cocoa and watching the snow fall.
Hopefully, if snow is what you are looking for when visiting Colorado, you will get your wish and see some, but do remember that it is dangerous to drive in, especially if you are not used to it. So, drive slow, keep plenty of room between you and other drivers, and watch out for black ice.
